Fine Wrinkling on Coarsely Meshed Thin Shells

چکیده

We propose a new model and algorithm to capture the high-definition statics of thin shells via coarse meshes. This predicts global, fine-scale wrinkling at frequencies much higher than resolution mesh; moreover, it is grounded in geometric analysis elasticity, does not require manual guidance, corpus training examples, nor tuning ad hoc parameters. first approximate shape shell using tension field theory, which material forces do resist compression. then augment this base mesh with wrinkles, parameterized by an amplitude phase that we solve for over mesh, together characterize geometry wrinkles. validate our approach against both physical experiments numerical simulations, show produces wrinkles qualitatively similar those predicted traditional solvers requiring orders magnitude more degrees freedom.

Wrinkling of pressurized elastic shells.

We study the formation of localized structures formed by the point loading of an internally pressurized elastic shell. While unpressurized shells (such as a ping-pong ball) buckle into polygonal structures, we show that pressurized shells are subject to a wrinkling instability. We study wrinkling in depth, presenting scaling laws for the critical indentation at which wrinkling occurs and the nu...

Wrinkling reveals a new isometry of pressurized elastic shells

We consider the point indentation of a pressurized, spherical elastic shell. Previously it was shown that such shells wrinkle once the indentation reaches a threshold value. Here, we study the behaviour of this system beyond the onset of instability. We show that rather than simply approaching the classical “mirror-buckled” shape, the wrinkled shell approaches a new, universal shape that reflec...

Thermally induced wrinkling in thin-film stacks on patterned substrates

Thermally induced film wrinkling is a fabrication and reliability challenge for thin-film stacks consisting of a compliant film capped by a stiffer film. The current understanding of film wrinkling is largely restricted to thin-film stacks on blanket substrates. An understanding of wrinkling in thin-film stacks on patterned substrates is of greater practical relevance to the microelectronic ind...

Capillary wrinkling of floating thin polymer films.

A freely floating polymer film, tens of nanometers in thickness, wrinkles under the capillary force exerted by a drop of water placed on its surface. The wrinkling pattern is characterized by the number and length of the wrinkles. The dependence of the number of wrinkles on the elastic properties of the film and on the capillary force exerted by the drop confirms recent theoretical predictions ...

Wrinkling of a Stretched Thin Sheet

When a thin rectangular sheet is clamped along two opposing edges and stretched, its inability to accommodate the Poisson contraction near the clamps may lead to the formation of wrinkles with crests and troughs parallel to the axis of stretch. A variational model for this phenomenon is proposed. The relevant energy functional includes bending and membranal contributions, the latter depending e...
